I reload shotgun shells on a high end loader. I had all four gauges for shooting skeet. I needed a set of 16 ga. dies for my hunting gun. At $365 a set I've been putting a purchase off. I was sitting in the shop about a month ago and the thought occurred to me ...... I'm supposed to be a Tool and Die Maker and this is a die set you need....... Get busy dumbXXX. So this is the result. Works perfectly and loads a very nice looking shell. Now I can blow that $365 down the barrel in the form of #8 shot.
All this was done on manual machines and I wouldn't think of doing it for anyone else. But it was an interesting project.

I've thought about doing that myself, just haven't gotten up the nerve. I wish someone had plans for one in 410 that worked.

I'm just now ordering reclaimed shot to try this spring. Guy's from Nebraska. Even with shipping it's still considerably cheaper than new.

I don't know a thing about shotshell reloading but that looks like very good work. What steel did you use? What Rockwell hardness do they need to finish out at? How many dies required to load one gauge shotshell?

The dies are made from O1 tool steel. Mainly because I had some. Ideally I would have made it from something different and hardened and ground them. This set will be used only for hunting loads and won't see a huge amount of volume. If I see wear I'll harden them and draw them back to 55-56 Rc.
this is for a progressive loader. There are 8 stations. Something happens in each station. If you'd like to see it operate go to spolargold.com. There is a good video if it in operation. This loader will produce a finished shell every 3 seconds. If you shoot a lot as My wife and I do, it's the cat's meow.
