Shell mill or other cutter for bridgeport horizontal milling attachment.. for surfacing a camelback before scraping.

So I want to use my Horizontal milling attachment setup for surfacing a Camelback I bought from Richard King. Seems like a good reason to learn how to use the attachment. As well, I think I can mill the bottom of the camelback using a shell mill covering the entire width of the surface. But as I am completely new to any type of horizontal milling, I don't have any cutters for the attachment. It's a 1 inch arbor. Seems like most are 1-1/4" inch? Any suggestions on what cutter I should buy?

Also, any links to videos relating to this would be great. I've already watched Keith Rucker's video on it. But my setup would be quite different than his horizontal. I think.

Thanks,
Paul

I don't think that you would be very happy with the results if your machine does not have enough travel to cover the whole surface; you don't say how long the casting is; lately I machined one for (one of our group) that suffered some shortfall in a similar situation, it was a 36" with the 45 degree dovetail side, the person tried to step it along, and had some troubles along the way, so he brought it to me and I took it to my old shop that I retired from and machined it on the horizontal boring mill.

Oh no I'm talking about the size of the flat on the bottom of the straight edge. My mill has the 42" table. I believe 36" length should be just fine.
The bottom of the straight edge is 3.25 wide. ..

It just occurred to me which John York you are. *waves* hey this is same straight edge you just did. But I couldn't get over there to see you guys. I recall now that you had access to that mill. I'm trying to get this ready to bring to our class and I will not be able to make i over the hill tomorrow. The weather looks terrible. Still snowing here.

So should I use the attachment for the mill or just go with a face mill?

Sorry to hear that you will be unable to make it to the meeting in Sac. Even with a 42" table, I can't imagine that you would have enough travel to do the whole 36" in one shot, you pretty much need to be able to start the cut with the cutter off the workpiece. Bottom line, I don't know the answer to your question, give it a try.

Well I might just be disappointed. Ah well. Probably shouldn't have bought the 36" :(

Apparently in my head I thought the travel was much higher... I guess only 30"?

The one thing that I know about the 36" is that it is damned heavy! I have a 48" Brown & Sharpe that is probably about half the weight, but of course, it does not have the dovetail projection.

I do not think you will be happy with the result of trying to do it in several resets, that is what Rex found out.
