Sheldon Metal Lathe - $1,800 (London Ky)

Sheldon's are good machines. This one is a bit of a conundrum. The machine itself has a 2 lever quick change gear box which I believe is post WWII. The cabinet however is one designed for a WWII military 5 ton 6x6 truck. It didn't originally come with the casters. The machine would normally be in the box on the drivers side between the rear fender and the back of the cab.

Here's a picture of a lathe in a WWII machine shop truck. Note the same style leg on the left end of the machine:

I ran one of the 2 lever types during my apprenticeship. The only thing I remember clearly was the wear on the ways that required feeding the cross-slide in slightly as a long cut progressed, and the fact that I couldn't wait to get to use one of the "real" lathes.

I love the things I learn from the discussions about these CL finds.

It is funny to see that pic of that stand and think WTH? That has to be stock because it wouldnt look so good otherwise....but why? Then comes Projectnut with answer and the pic! Projectnut do you have any job stories? What could they fix back there? Look at how they have that shaper head cranked over 90deg. What WERE they doing?

I have same cabinet on my 11” Sheldon. The tail stock end of bed had s bolt and spring setup

There are lots of job stories, however I don't feel the need to embarrass myself anymore than I already have.

Oops, wasn’t trying to embarrass. Just curious. Sorry.
