I just started using a Jet metal lathe, Model GH 1440 - W3. It has a quick change tool post. I'm wondering what options are available for small radius/ball turning. Ideally seeking something that I can either buy or make that would fit this lathe. I will be turning aluminum, brass or softer metal in no more than a one inch ball.

Would appreciate any thoughts.

Thanks

Jim

I'm not sure, but you ought to be able to center your tool behind the center pivot of your compound and swinging the compound, make it your ball turner. I did this with the Lantern Post tool holder.

I'm watching several of these on eBay. I'd like to put my son onto a chess set project, with nice curves and classic Staunton style. Might require a small set of inside and outside turning tools, but it would be great experience. Anyway, the take-away point being check eBay, search with "lathe" and "attachment" and you'll filter out all the baseball memorabilia. And it might inspire you to build something, the one below is $70+!

I have never tried it but I like the idea of using a boring head to turn a ball or radius. Plus, it's always nice to have one tool that can preform multiple operations.

Not the best video but you get the idea.

Thanks Chippy!

I knew I had seen one like that somewhere, but I don't believe I found it when I compiled that list above.
I like that design too.
