I was trying to search for a post by mikey (RIP) and found out that search would not allow me to use his name. Mikey wrote many fine posts, so I was astonished that the new software on HM doesn't allow it. Is there some way to fix that bug?

In particular I tried DOC for topic and mikey for the author, since I was trying to find some of his posts on maximum DOC on his tool grinds on his Sherline lathe.

His tool grinding posts are still active, so I'm wondering why search is blocking his name.

I miss him. He was really helpful to me when I was starting out.

FWIW, it seems that other deceased members isn't allowed. Tried a couple of other deceased member's names and they don't show up.
mikey, royesses, Billh50, Bi11Hudson, etc.

Please lets not let them vanish!

It seems search is only on active members? Should be all members that have ever been, right?

Click on member deceased or not . View all content and you can find what you're looking for .

But can you search within their contents using search? Kind of tedious to read 500 posts. Just seems odd that search is limited to alive members.

I’m not a machinist so not a part of the crowd as much but I’ve been here long enough to recognize many many names. Was unaware the Bi11Hudson had passed.

To be fair, I'm not sure about Bi11Hudson, but can't search on his posts as author either. Can't search on Bob Korves posts either.

Seems to be a "feature" in the new upgrade. It appears that search is only done using a restricted database, rather than the full one. In other words, search is being done on a different list than the full membership list, or deceased members are being excluded somehow. In my opinion, that's a disservice to the community. We stand on the shoulders of giants, so it would be helpful indeed to search for their knowledge and experiences.

As far as I can tell, this issue came with the recent forum updates. I distinctly remember searching for a specific post from mikey after his death and search for subject and author worked then. Post upgrade, this functionality is missing.
@vtcnc when you get a chance, can you please look into this? We'd all be grateful if you could.

Bruce

Possible it is a search function. Will take a look at it later tonight

I had a couple of spare minutes over lunch to replicate the problem. Yup, can't search by that user group. I took a look at some options I can't figure it out now. Back to work and maybe tonight if I have some spare time (my son surprised us with a visit today - wife called to let me know) I'll check in on the developer's update documentation and see what's up.

I would be remiss to not point out that you can do the following in the meantime:

And a number of deceased friends and their content can be traced from that sub-forum.

@WobblyHand ok, I am waiting for some assistance from the developer. In the meantime:

Member Search will auto suggest member names as you type in the search box. If somebody else has the username @wobblyfoot, it might suggest that before it suggests your username. This feature is useful because we can't remember how to spell some of the odd usernames people dream up so the forum software provides an assist for you.

For some reason, in the case of deceased members, their usernames are not auto-populating when users search for their names. However, IF you know the exact spelling, you can still search. So, when you are typing in M-i-k-e-....all of the other usernames that are active will auto suggest. What you need to do is type the name in exactly, then click outside of the search box so the other auto suggested names clear away and then you can press enter. Hope this makes sense. Give it a try.

This gets tricky with a username like Bob Korves. Is it BobKorves, Bob Korves or Bob_Korves? You have to know the spelling to get there. I am determined to get an answer from the developer in the meantime. Hopefully it is just a toggle setting I am unaware of.
