Good evening,
Tomorrow I am going to an auction, there are very large bolts and tractor drawbars.

For general machining, practice and such would this material be acceptable or is it likely to be rubbish?

Inside every piece of rusty metal is a good part , you just have to get it out ! :encourage:

It will sell for less than scrap value. You will be bidding against scrap metal guys. They all know each other and the auctioneer knows them too. Sometimes those guys work together agreeing between them who gets what. They may bid you up just for grins. You will still get a good deal.

I go to lots of auctions. I have gotten some good deals on stuff. I have found that if you casually focus on stuff you really want the regulars sometimes will let you get it. I make a list of the items that I am interested in. You will see other people doing that. I often ask people what's on their list and share what's on mine. For example I was at one auction where they had some veneer and dial calipers. In talking with the other guys looking at the calipers I let it be known that I was interested in a certain set for my own use. I was bidding against one other guy when I heard a whisper behind me telling the other person to stop bidding because I would just out bid him. I got a nice 6" dial caliper in its original box and an 8" veneer caliper in it's original box for under $20.

Have fun at the auction.

Yeah I've been to a few auctions, I'm pretty good at setting a price before I start bidding. I just had never ran across large bolts before..
