scissor type knurls

Am I correct in thinking that these are held in the tool post, opened up to the dia of the job and tightened up so the knurls squeeze the job from the top to bottom?
How tight do they have to be?
Once they are in place can they be moved along the length of the job using the auto feed or do they have to be fed by hand.
Thanks

You are correct in your understanding. Take a look at this thread:

It is a variation on the traditional scissor knurler that has a lot of power. Several members of this forum have started to build them.

I wouldn't hesitate to drive my knurler under power, if it was properly set up, but I haven't knurled anything long enough that I couldn't just crank it along by hand.

Yep.
Set it up over the center, lathe running, back it off a little(.010) Tighten until you get the knurl required, with angle the tool slightly away. Crank it back to center, engage the apron and feed toward the headstock.
I think a knurling tool is one that is worth buying well, cry once and never look back. I got the Aloris #19 on a AXA mount and couldn't be happier. Makes my little Atlas TH42 knurl like a champ.

A tip I would like to give if your are knurling, is try to feed towards your tailstock if you are using it, and if it is possible. The tailstock is more solid that than the 3 jaw chuck, sometimes the chuck will slip and leave a mark on your workpiece.
