At my local gun club, I am treasurer since 1987, we have the gun of the month. The gun is a picture and whathaveyou on the front page of the last club meeting minutes. We also will bring in a gun that maybe some members have never seen before.

This month it is my turn to bring something and I am going to bring a Savage 99G, born around 1927. It is in 250-3000 originally and the second barrel is in 22 BR. As both cases have the same head size there are no issues with the bolt and firing pin assembly.
The barrel was off my Win 70 SA that was originally chambered in 222 Remington. I recontoured the barrel to the same profile as the Savage barrel. Cut the original threaded shank portion off and threaded the new shank (Square threads) and cut the extractor loaded indicator slots. I then took it to my smithy who chambered it and milled the dovetail slot for the forearm retaining stud. Crowned the muzzle and blued the barrel. In the pictures the barrel without sights is the converted Winchester barrel.

Internally I replaced the cartridge carrier with one for a 308 Win. Did a little work on it to help the cases sit better in the grooves as the BR is very square vs 308. It all works and the two cartridges feed through and the barrels look alike.

Should be an interesting conversation starter.;)

Very cool, especially since I really like the 99's. I have 3 of them, 1 in 250-3000, the second in 303Savage & the 3rd in 300 Savage. I know they made one with a rifle barrel & a second in 410 sold as a set but have never seen one in person.

I too have not seen the 410 combo. The barrel was available as an accessory back in the day. Had to be used with a rifle that was chambered for a rimmed case originally, I believe.
I too have one in 300 Savage, was my uncles.

I have seen a number if the sets! they came in a leather case with cleaning equipment! have always wanted to have one but could never afford it. my dream gun if I live long enough is make a barrel in 35 Remington, to use on my 1925 take down 300 savage. how did they cut the extractor groves in the one shown in this this post, were they milled or filed?

On the factory barrel, the grooves are machine cut. Likely on a mill using a form tool is my guess. On the barrel I converted to Savage shank, I used a Dremel with a cut off wheel to approximate the factory cuts.
