Sandpaper is for wood, emery cloth is for metal. A hardware store visit would be a good place to start.

Sandpaper is a generic name for coated abrasives. Both paper backed and cloth backed are still coated abrasives. Many minerals are used to make coated abrasives, including: aluminum oxide, silicon carbide, zirconia, and garnet. Emery is a mineral that was previously used to make coated abrsive, but to my knowledge is out of fashion. Bonded abrasives are what make up grinding wheels and the like (no backing involved.)
In descending order of manufacturer quality, in my experience:
3M
VSM
Mirka
Ekamant
Indasa
Norton
Sun

Everybody knows 3M; the next four companies are all european manufacturers that may not be as easy to source. Norton makes five star bonded products and their coated products are servicable. Sun products are Korean and distrubuted broadly in NA.

Like any other product, you get what you pay for. None of these products come cheap, but once you've used a quality abrasive, you'll never want to use the junk that loads up or sloughs off before you've made a single pass.

We use Carborundum or Norton garnet in the cabinet shop. Norton sanding belts for the sanders and edge sander. I like the Carborundum premier red /Adalox for sanding between coats in the finishing department. Also like the red sanding sponges from Carborundum for finishing. They work great for polishing metal too. Richelieu.com sells these.
In my metal shop I have been using Klingspor products. Rolls of aluminum oxide
Flap wheels, zip cut and grinding disks I like Walter products. I buy these at my local hardware supplier,Bickles Hardware in Niagara Falls

Not quite on topic ... but one of my favorite "sanding" tricks is to buy inexpensive 4" x 24" sanding belts, cut them in half lengthwise, and use them on my half sheet sander. Much sturdier than even the best grades of paper, and a lot less expensive than custom cut sheets. They're not quite as wide as the pad, but reasonably close.

I'm sitting on about 350 3"x24" sanding belts . You need to buy a 3" sander and I'll sell you the belts on the cheap ! :big grin:
