posted before about a spindle problem with my new (to me ) rockwell 21-100 vertical mill.
figured i would post some info about what i found out, as it may be of use to others.

so when i got the mill i noticed that the spindle pulley had a bit of play in it. took it apart to see
what was going on. that was interesting as taking the spindle pulley off required taking the
motor off, taking the pulley housing off, which was held on by the same four bolts that held the
spindle pulley bearing retainer onto the milling head.

removing those bolts and unscrewing the lever for the spindle brake allowed me to slide the
pulley assembly up and off the splined upper portion of the spindle which extends up into the
spindle pulley assembly.

then, the pulley assembly had to be disassembled while still inside of the pulley housing as it
does not fit out of the housing without being disassembled.

it was fairly easy. the smallest pulley step is the end of the pulley hub which extends through the
pulley assembly, and has a locknut threaded onto the other end of it, accessible from the bottom
of the spindle pulley. i was able to remove with a punch, after prying back the one tab of the lock
washer that was holding the locknut. then, the hub slides out and the inside of the assembly
(spindle brake, and spindle pulley bearings ) are accessible.

the spindle pulley bearings had worn a bit of a groove into the spindle pulley hub.
this was causing the play. i am thinking about using a spring punch to increase the
OD of the bearing seat on the spindle hub to remove the play, unless anyone else has any suggestions.

here is a link to an album of photos of what i described above.

hope that helps someone out there.

Eian,

Just a question on your work with your Rockwell Mill. Did you proceed to change out the bearings on the spindle? I likewise have a Rockwell-Delta Mill like yours and when I use the mill at high speed the spindle bearings are noisy indicating that bearings will need to be replaced at some point. Any info in this regard would be helpful. I see by your work removing the motor, pulleys etc., is not a thirty minute job. Thanks for sharing your experiences - John
