Rockwell 20" bandsaw

This is my first post ever on a forum so let me know if I am in the wrong place.

I resurrected a Rockwell 20" band saw and powered it from a VFD ,works well. The problem is the bottom wheel (tire) was shot so I bought one on ebay and it will just will not stay put, tried different adhesives etc. Two things, the upper one (original) seems to be a harder compound , might just be age, and the new one did not have that keel, if you will, that fits in the groove of the aluminum wheel.

Any thoughts or advice. Currently using it without a tire ,seems suspiciously reliable this way but, may be a little hard on the teeth

I wouldn't run without a tire--what I have done is find an old truck inner tube and cut the widths that you want and stretch them over the wheel. they don't last forever but they are cheap to replace, and you can get about 20 or more out of just one tube. these also work great on wood band saws. a little adhesive on the wheel helps them stay in place. I also have taken an old gear cog belt and cut the cogs off and glued it on the flat side on the bandsaw wheel. you have to have a splice since these do not stretch and this works great because the belt rubber is firm. I keep all these resources real handy cause I like to do a good and inexpensive fix to problems

Contact Bobby at Woodworkers Tool Works- http://www.woodworkerstoolworks.com/- and have the model and serial #'s for him and he'll send you the correct tire and tell you how to crown it (if it needs it).
Don't run it without a tire like that; you will not only wreck the teeth on one side of the blade, you can also ruin the wheel and wheel bearings.

If the rim of your saw's wheel looks like this, then you'll need the Delta 426040945002 Texin tire specifically made for the wheel. While this photo is of a Yates J-120, the Delta/Rockwell 20" wheel is pretty much the same rim size.

The tire shown is the old Carter Jiffy Tire with the integral steel bands, a tire not made any more for the 20" machines.

Found a photo of a Delta wheel rim (the newer style, anyway) ("Newer" = after 1953±)

Because its a polyurethane mix, it machines well when detailing the crown with a sharp end mill rather than abrasive.

Below: A detailed crown. While the tire does come with a crown, detailing it after mounting, gives 100% rather than 95%.

Re: Rockwell 20" bandsaw

WOW ,
Thanks everyone. I have some avenues to explore on this. Bob, I'll try to scare up a tire that fits from Delta, if that gets offensively expensive then I try some of the other remedies.

The one I got through ebay was a no-name tire and seemed too thick and too soft. I have had good luck the urethane tires on the 14 and 16" This one was just neoprene (I presume). Boy when that tire starts coming off at speed ,it gets your attention in a big hurry.
I'l keep you posted as to my remedy

thanks Phil
