Hi,
I have a Central Machinery gear head mill. I think its the same as a RF 40 or 45. Its alway run well but recently it has locked up. Won’t spin when turned on and the breaker blows. Before I delve into that head, which the thought of is overwhelming, does anyone have an idea as to what I should check first that just might be simple stupid but just overlooked? Oh, the spindle lock is not engaged!

M first step would be to pull the motor to make sure it's not an issue with that. I assume you change and monitor oil level regularly?

I think you'll have to open it up- sounds like something came loose and jammed the gears inside
Selector fork maybe?

Does the motor make any sounds before the beaker blows?

Start with the basics.

with the power disconnected.
Can the spindle be turned by hand?
Can the motor be turned by hand?
With the drive of the motor disconnected can the motor or spindle be turned by hand?
This is all to verify if it is the head or the motor that is locked up.

With the motor disconnected from the head will it run without popping the breaker.

Basic lathe operation was to rotate chuck one turn before power on the insure all clear.

Apply same here...

Locate motor and rotate motor, if not, remove belt and see what moves.

Open cover of what does not move.

RF45 will need to pull the motor as it's directly connected I believe.

nothing is overwhelming if you take it a step at a time.
take pics.
keep the parts organized from where they came, which shaft they belong to.
if you can video the process.

These things are easier than you think.

If you end up in a bind and need a hand, send a message. I'm in downtown Bremerton and might could help.
