Well Just did some trading and I am now the proud owner of a Washington milling and Drilling Machine. PO changed out the 3 phase motor to a single phase 2 hp 220 volt motor, that motor is smoked. Do I just replace the 220 motor with like kind, or go back to 3 phase and a vfd? All suggestions are appreciated and what replacements would you suggest. I’m new at all this so please be patient. Thanks Bart

3 Phase unless you can get a single phase free. Whatever frame size fits, or you can make fit.

^^what John said.

I would like to change mine over to 3ph VFD to not have to do belt changes. But my original motor from ‘88 is still going strong and I don’t spend $$ unless I have to.

I took the 2 HP 1-phase off my RF-30 clone though it was working perfectly, still have it, but I reeely wanted 3-ph and VFD. I'd sell it cheap if you were in Seattle but I don't want to box and ship. But I'd advise you to pass on that deal even if you were in Seattle, because you should either fix your existing motor or upgrade to 3-ph.

Tried to edit my last post but the edit function is glitching...

Just wanted to add, find out the existing motor shaft diameter, beacause the easiest motor swap is the one that fits your pulley stack.

If you have a lathe, you can bore the pulley bigger to fit a new motor, or make a shim if the new spindle is smaller. So a diff. spindle diameter isn't a deal-breaker, it just makes more work for you.

Ask for tips & tricks here if you have any trouble getting the pulley off the existing motor.

Is your motor really smoked or does it just need a new capacitor? Does it hum at all or totally dead?
Variable speed is more useful on a lathe IMO but it's nice to have anyway

Thanks for the replies. It doesn’t appear to be any brand motor that I recognize. PO said he purchased it off Amazon and that it could be replaced for about 180 dollars. If I have to buy a motor anyway it just seems best to do it 1 time. I’m sure the cheapest option is just to replace with another sub $200. Motor from Amazon but that money could go towards the 3 phase motor and vfd. Any suggestions as to type/brand of vfd. I hate doing electrical, I get by but it is my weakest area of knowledge. Thanks Bart

I'd check the capacitor on the existing motor before replacing it.

Good, quality brand, used 3phase motors are usually fairly inexpensive. You might want to look around at what's avalible in your area.

You like changing belts on an RF-30/31!?:p

Seriously though, maybe I've got my Warco Minor mounted up too high (it's on a standard-height, welded, 40 mm box section workbench) but whilst it's not like being repeatedly punched in the balls, changing speeds is a bit of a fag.

If I hadn't angered the gods of responsible spending, there'd be a 3PH motor and a VFD on its way to me right now! ;)
