i did find out that easeyoff oven cleaner works great for cleaning that old paint of your lathe gears, dont let your wife know and deff do it outside and have a resporator:lmao:

The old stuff had NaOH, so it was a pretty strong stripper. I use a 5 gallon can of Berryman's B-9 carb cleaner. Safe on aluminum. Stinks.

It has Methylene Chloride (Dichloromethane)
Cresols Mixture
Mixed Xylenes
Sodium Bichromate
Ethyl Benzene

The new formula has changed, so I can't speak for it, but the old stuff will strip paint off anything you can dump in it.

sounds like it works like a charm:biggrin:

Degrease the gears and then electro strip them. http://antique-engines.com/electrol.asp The paint will just wash off with water after. Less toxic than the strippers. Only works on steel and cast iron. Also if you can get your wife out of the house the dish washer works great if the parts are aluminium. Just don't forget to unload them before she gets home. :bitingnails: That's a fight you don't want.
