Reference information for Milwaukee die grinders and compact routers with 1/4" collets: interchangeable collets for smaller bit shanks or drills. Milwaukee has a 1/8" collet kit 48-66-2486.

These numbers are from the service parts lists on Milwaukee's website:
5196 electric die grinder-------1/4" collet 48-66-0975 and nut 48-68-0031---(48-66-1015 kit)
2784 M18 die grinder----------1/4" collet 48-66-0975 and nut 48-68-0031---(14-46-0167 kit)
2939, 2984 M18 die grinder---1/4" collet not shown and nut not shown------(44-40-0091 kit)
2486 M12 die grinder----------1/4" collet 48-66-0974 and nut 48-68-0031---(14-46-0166 kit)
2723 M18 compact router-----1/4" collet 43-44-0043 and nut 48-68-0031---(14-46-0167 kit)

Since they use different parts numbers for each tool, I wanted to know if they were interchangeable. I contacted Milwaukee customer service and was told that the M12 die grinder collets 48-66-0974 are the same as the corded die grinder collets 48-66-0975. Who knows why they use different part number? Go figure! The service parts list also shows the 48-66-0975 collet for the 2784 M18 die grinder, which also uses the same collet and nut assembly 14-46-0167 as the 2723 M18 compact router. So all those tools should be interchangeable. That leaves the 2939 and 2984 M18 die grinders but most likely those are also interchangeable with all the rest.
With a self-releasing collet, always snap the nut onto the collet before assembling to the grinder and bit.

Elaire Corp has several inch/metric sizes for Milwaukee die grinders, with "MX-25" part numbers.

Univeral/DeVlieg calls this collet design "Acura-Flex" (possible they are the originator?), this series is "1/4 capacity Acura-Flex" with size capacity ranging from 1/32" to 1/4"; part numbers AF00 to AF14. The collets are available by 1/64" nominal increment, with each collet rated for .015-.02" clamping range; theoretically there is a collet for any drill or bit shank size between 1/32" and 1/4". The 1/4" collet will fit 6mm shank, etc. The collets have a 10° included angle and the nut/shaft is 9/16-28 thread.

Somma Tools has an "Acura-Flex* Style" series AF25 with a full range of inch and metric sizes. US Shop Tools has an "Acura-Flex interchangeable" AF25 series with a full range of sizes.

Exact Tooling has an "Accu-Collet AF25" series, interchangeable with Universal Acura-Flex® style (AF) collets, in a full range including a 6.5mm size.

Centaur Tools has an "RDF25" series (Interchangeable with Universal Acura-Flex style collets) in a range of inch sizes, 3mm and 5mm.

Briney Tooling shows a series of "BF/AF25" collets on their website but the page did not display fully on a PC or droid phone.

I purchased a 5/32" RDF collet, assembled it with the original Milwaukee nut to my M12 die grinder and it worked perfectly. Bit was secure and ran true.

Thanks for posting this. I have an issue with my Milwaukee die grinder, in that it is very difficult to get the collet to release the shank of the tool. I hope one of these aftermarket systems will help.

More info about self-releasing collets; Milwaukee only has some of this in their user's manuals.

Assembly: place collet on an flat surface and place the nut over the collet. Press down on the nut to snap the nut and collet together.
Disassembly: push the collet toward the side of the nut or use a rod to push the collet out of the nut. See photos attached.

The Milwaukee manuals don't explain how the collet nut has to be broken free, then loosened several more turns (with the wrenches) to pull the collet taper out of the shaft. Also, that you should not fully bottom the tool into the shaft. When inserting the bit, leave about 1/8" clearance for the collet to fully press into the taper.
