My son came to me yesterday and asked me if i could build him a recycle bin for cans and bottles.
I told him, i'll make the best one i can, using the wood i got here!
apparently he is learning about recycling at school .
i couldn't resist the opportunity to make something useful and recycling at the same time
i sat down for a few minutes and came up with a loose game plan...
then went to town....
i made a base first,
then i made the top. the mitered wood is resawn pallet stringer ripped to 1" thick.
the top was supposed to be 10" x 14-1/2" but i messed up and made it a square 14-1/2"
i attached the top to the rear by a couple pieces of pallet wood so i could get the height correct.
then custom mitered each slat , utilizing broken pallet pieces to my advantage for the sides and rear
for aesthetics, the front boards were resawn pallet slats, no broken boards were used in the front
i used pallet oak for the front boards. 5 of the boards are straight ripped, 1 board (center right) is tapered to fit
this side was challenging and fun because i used broken pieces for this side and to make the other side too!
i even went as far as to attach broken wedges resawn and shaped to fill gaps in the natural cracks
from breaks suffered during discombobulation of the pallets earlier.
you'll see 2 examples of oak wedges about 6" long on top and bottom of the pine slat.
here's the rear. the 2 outer slats are pallet pine- the inner slats are pallet oak
2 of the oak slats were naturally broken, so i was able to join them fairly closely without more than a couple shaves with a plane
the inside...
and my mark ....
there are 2- 5/8" runners under the bottom added to keep it off the floor, hence the 23-5/8" total height.
as always thank you for reading and commenting.
