So I just won this at auction and I need to pick it up. From what I can tell there is no provision to run pipe through the upper part of the machine to lift it from like other grinders.

The grinder is a 1950's vintage I think. I didnt pay much for it, so if its clapped out I will sell it for scrap

The pictures of people moving the machine show the machine being pick up with chains attached to the holes on the bottom feet.

Can anyone who has one tell me the diameter of the hole throught the bottom feet. I will need to buy some eye bolts and chain to lift it

Also If anyone knows the footprint of the base that would be helpful as well.

I don’t know the actual diameter of the foot holes, but they look like they’re about 5/8”-11tpi or possibly 1/2”-13tpi

This may sound obvious. What ever you do. Don't lift by the spindle or over arm.

My Harig came from a barn in Vermont. The owner used a tractor with a fork lift attachment to lift by the spindle barrel and motor. This bent the vertical travel hand wheel and shaft.

Had to replace the shaft with a piece of drill rod machined.

Before you do anything, lift the table and examine for balls or rollers on the ways. If fitted, these must be removed before attempting to transport the machine otherwise they will hammer the ways and ruin the grinder during transit.
Not much help with the rigging except lagging the base to a pallet which would make it move easily and securely by forklift or pallet jack.

Ive been doing a great deal of reading about surface grinders in the past several years so I like to think I know a few things about moving them but never hurts to hear advice.

I didnt know until after the auction that in order to move it myself I have to have some kind of liability insurance for 1 million dollars.
There will be a rigger onsite to load it in my trailer but who knows what they are going to do. I have heard horror stories of riggers moving delicate machine tools.

I want to take the table off (it has ball bearing ways according to the owners manual I downloaded) Not sure I will be allowed to do that. Im not sure I would have even bid on the auction had i known.

Im not new to auctions this is my 4th one but this is the first one that did not say beforehand that u needed insurance to move stuff.

Stay tuned

Well i was able to pick it up by myself after all. Gave a dude working there $20 to lift it up onto my cart from the bottom with a forklift once I got it up in the air.

This thing is HEAVY even more than my Bridgeport. I had to push it into my garage with the rear of my trunk. I will have to take it apart completely in order to get it into the basement.

I have not decided on whether to paint it.

it appears that its an earlier model. Its a rack instead of cable drive, dials are not the micro adjustable type but the head is adjustable.
