my question is does the numbers change in the formula when your overall length changes even though your cutting the same taper at a specified length, in other words if i cut a mt5 out of a piece of bar stock 7 inchs long or a piece 9 inches long are the numbers going to change ty much mac:biggrin:

The taper per inch is constant, but if you're using the tailstock offset method, the total offset will be different.

Thank you Tony. that was a big answer for me, a matter of fact it had me stumped lol but i understand now, buy useing tail stock your tangent angle will change on work piece but by using the compound once it is set it cant change:thinking:

Right. You can't put a Morse taper on a 10 foot long piece with the tailstock. Compound, yes....but not tailstock.

but your taper is limited to how much movment you have on compound:biggrin:

I didn't answer this one, but yes, the larger the Morse taper, the longer it is also, so you may not have enough
travel with a compound. Same applies to Jarner, B&S, etc. You have to stay within the travel limits.

Yes i understand that, the biggest i would be turning is prob a 5mt which is 4-15/16 and i have about 7" of travel on my compound:biggrin:
