First I'd like to thank those that explained what a couple dials and levers on my little Monarch JR lathe did.

I have been reading some threads about thread dials here and on other forums and wondered if I bought a used thread dial that I can fasten to the carriage do I only need to figure out what threads I need to make for a new gear to match up with the lead screw and it will work?

I just went out and measured the lead screw and it's .750 in diameter and has 8 tpi. If I find one that matched that off another brand lathe and made a mounting bracket will it work?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Since it's 8 TPI (and presumably has an Acme thread), you will be able to use a threading dial from another lathe if it also has an 8 TPI leadscrew. 95% of them do. It will work as is. No figuring on a new gear required - just use the one the donor dial.
