Could some one explain the diffrent sizes used for these tool holders.
Shars Tools lists, AXA, BXA, CXA, and CA.
They do list the dimensions but not the size of the dovetail, 60' or 45'.
In assuming the dovetails are of different widths. I'd like some extra for my lathe, but I don't want order from the U.S. and end up getting some thing that won't fit my lathe. I's a real pain to return items to the states.
I've checked the Aloris site ,but it wasn't much help.
I'm also interested in making my own with a dovetail cutter, but again , what size?

Anyone?

Hi aliva,

What Bill said plus if you want to make your own extra holders there are a number of sites where projects making Aloris type tool holders is spelled out. The basic process is to measure the dovetail in the holders that come with your holder using a set of pins and and simply cut the dovetails in the DIY holders to the same dimensions. The other dimensions of the block can be taken from Aloris catalog or custom as you need. Do you want to make some custom holders or just more of the common ones? There are a number of vendors in the USA importing the cloned holders in the common designs starting at as little as $9 or $10 each, US$. I don't know what vendor options you have in your area but I would think there are some for low cost holders. I have some home made and some from a vendor near Chicago (CDCO) and they all work fine on the Aloris block. Do you know what extra holders you want? If you cannot find one of the project sites with a search get back and I will see if I can find some links for you.

Thanks for all the info. I managed to find a company that make tool holders and posts. In there catalog they display a template which you can just print out, put you holder or post on and it will give you the Aloris size. Mine happens to be a BXA. The swing on my lathe is 12", 14" thru the gap. I would much rather to make my own holders as I need them, I really don't know what I need at the moment other than a boring bar holder and a few more regular 5/8" slots for regular insert holders.
I'm now in the process of making a dovetail cutter. I know I could buy one, but that's not much fun is it. After all that why I bought a mill, to make tools,to make tools to make chips.

CDCO.com sells them so cheap I usually buy from them and only make my own specialty holders.

As a warning it seems that some people have had troubles with them but I'm a happy unaffiliated customer.

Steve
