This Clausing lathe I just bought, has a 6" adjustable 3 jaw buck chuck. I couldn't be happy, but when I adjust the chuck, the closer you get bringing the jaws together, (about 1 1/2" apart), the harder it is to tighten. I've removed the jaws and cleaned all I could, but it doesn't seem to help. I have not stripped it down all the way down by removing the faceplate screws and possibly seperating the face plate from the body. Has anyone out there had the same problem, was this the fix? Was there anything to watch out for? Thanks in advance, Jim.
***Found the problem, damaged chuck. I stripped it all the way down, did find it dirty, but when I cleaned it, it did not work any better. I stripped it down again, removed the scroll plate and tried to manually feed the jaws thru the t-slots. That's where I found the issue. I think the previous owner had run something into the chuck with the jaws extended out, damaging/re-forming the body around the t-slot. I used a fine file and smoothed out the slots untill I could just feed the jaws thru them. I'm sure this was not the correct way, but I think the alternative was to replace the chuck. Any way, the chuck works now. Thanks everyone for your input, Jim.
