Hi all. I just got a 101-28930 and am looking to clean it all up nice. Anyone see a problem powder coating instead of painting? I could fit all but the bed in my oven. Curious if the metal (whatever it is) would be harmed by the heat.

Most of the painted parts are not heat treated anyway. I don't see a problem with it. I think most of those painted parts are cast iron. It should be fine. What are you going to do with the bed if you decide to powder coat?

I'll probably try and find a paint for the bed. I think I read that the belt cover and such is made from some zinc material, seems to light to be cast iron is that correct?

Glen,

The belt cover, gears, and a lot of other small parts are die-cast in a zinc alloy called Zamak. I would avoid subjecting any of the cast parts to the temperatures necessary for powder coating. Some might not matter if they warp but if you warp the bed just a little bit, you will have to have it ground. If it warps more than about .005", it's scrap.

I say powder coat away! I do it all the time with no problems. You should be able to coat anything that fits in your oven. Good luck and make sure we are in the know. :thumbzup3:

Thanks for all the input guys. After more reading I see most use epoxy paint. I'll probably go with that to eliminate the hassle of trying to match powder and paint. To me it's not worth it if there is even a chance of warping. Lathe is in good shape now, hate to harm it trying to make it pretty ☺
