penetrating oils

I WAS NOT SURE WHERE TO POST THIS...
< "Machinist's Workshop" recently published information on various penetrating oils. The magazine reports they tested these products for "break out torque" on rusted nuts and bolts. A subjective test was made of popular penetrating oils, with the unit of merit being the torque required to remove the nut from a "scientifically rusted" bolt.

Average torque load to loosen nut:
No Oil used ........................516 foot pounds
WD-40 ..................... ........238 foot pounds
PB Blaster .........................214 foot pounds
Liquid Wrench ......................127 foot pounds
Kano Kroil .........................106 foot pounds
ATF/Acetone mix...................... 53 foot pounds

The ATF/Acetone mix is a "home brew" mix of 50/50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone. Note this "home brew" released bolts better than any commercial product in this one particular test.

Our local machinist group mixed up a batch, and we all now use it with equally good results. Note also that Liquid Wrench is almost as good as Kroil for 20% of the price.

ATF/Acetone mix is best, but you can also use ATF and lacquer thinner in a 50/50 mix. ATF = Any type of Automatic Transmission Fluid

Ive read some place that ATF is just hydraulic oil. If so I would imagine hydraulic oil and acetone would do the same and maybe even be a little cheaper.

Falcon, when I was millwrighting we used Knockrust (sp?) or Liquid Wrench for many years. When we finally tried Kroil it seemed to work better most of the time. Thanks for this post, especially the ATF/Acetone mix. I will definitely give this a try.

[h=2]i wanted to take the time to thank George Wilson for his input on another thread regarding penetrating fluids.[/h]
the recipe is quite simple:
1 part Automatic Transmission Fluid
1 part Acetone
mix them up and apply to the intended surfaces, be careful it loosens paint as a side effect
if you are patient, and apply the mixture for a few days it works miracles.
i was able to remove the chuck on Henrietta without any cussing involved
i made the mixture, applied it to the spindle/chuck connection gave the assembly a few taps with a soft faced hammer. and repeated the process for 3 days.
on the third day, it was a matter of slightly holding the spindle with a strap wrench. the chuck took less than 20ft lbs to back it off.
no damage to gearing or the chuck or spindle.
thanks George!!!

ATF and any mineral spirts or lacquer thinner works well as penetrating oil. We have used it for years in the shop.
ATF and Kerosene makes good cutting oil and leaves a good rust preventing film on your machines.Only downside is it leaves the same on you too. Gojo gets it off hands but smell on cloths makes SWMBO testy at best.

Time is the key to getting the ATF/Acetone mix to work. Give it a few squirts over a couple of weeks and it will do miracles.

The problem I have with this is I have never had eny luck with Liquid Wrench But PB Blaster works fine. Never have seen or used kroil. Brake fluid works good also BUT don't get it on paint you don't want to remove.

..........parafin wax, heat part(s), apply wax to "joints", and the melted parafin is drawn in.

I grew up in the age where acetone was still a carcinogen so I am still careful when using the stuff. Milk was unhealthy back then too...
