Options For Creating A Hole

Hey,

Am a bit confused about the different ways of creating a hole.

What are the circumstances when one starts to consider mounting the workpiece on the cross slide and the tool in the chuck instead of holding the workpiece in the chuck and the tool in the tailstock or cross slide ?

I see both ways undertaken in various books and posts

I think it depends on convenience and what the part if for. On my 109 I bored the hole in the boring bar holder using a drill bit and reamer in the chuck and the toolpost (2 way) on the compound. If it's a smaller part that can be dialed in easily, I'll do it in the chuck. Without a milling attachment it can be tough to hold parts in the right place on the cross slide.
