The price of disc brakes has come down quite a bit, So I might order even though I'm not ready to build this yet.

where when I started thinking about this a set of brakes was $60, they are now around $20 , for 2 front and back. I might even replace my brake on the clausing mill with one.. Just to hold it while breaking the draw bar.

Thank you for posting this. I lost track of that video!
I have had this on my 238 item long project list :p

Would this be a bad idea with a threaded spindle? I'd like to have a brake on my Atlas too.

@jwmay If a person was to just stomp on it I think it could be bad.
I've also been thinking about modifying my chucks to reduce the risk of it spinning off into the air.

I don't really care, if I need to stop it, I'll take the consequences. (not meant disrespectfully, meant more of the 2nd part being important)
On my 3 jaw chuck, I have a brass set screw so I can tighten the chuck on.
I may do the same on my 4 jaw, and may even dimple the spindle for a more positive lock on.

Think of it as :

A) Crash protection
B) A safety disconnect emergency stop.

I already have a Grizzly magnetic switch. MODEL H8240 no longer avail.. paid 6.95 a piece bought 3 or 4..
Now they have one for 23.95 https://www.grizzly.com/products/shop-fox-120v-magnetic-switch/d4155

Not seeing the need.....

My really large, older equipment like the 612 Monarch and the K&T 3K vertical would both benefit from some saftey enhancements along these lines, even if the foot lever only triggered an e-stop.

I always forget the one at work has a brake. But I can see it being useful.

My machine takes way too long to stop for my satisfaction. At a minimum this might prevent a crash. If I ever get clothing (or worse) caught in the lathe I will really regret not doing this. I also looked at snowmobile brakes, but this seems easy and robust enough to do the job. Thanks for posting.
