Old eyes & my machinist scale

Probably a basic question here.

Looking to purchase a new 6 in ruler. I purchased a new black/ white markings scale a few months ago, & I noticed that the on the scale where I hold in / oily fingers, is looking "blemished" kind of white, making the fine graduation difficult for my 65 yr old eyes to see.

Anyway, suggestion appreciated.

Look for a Starrett, or something similar, with a brushed finish, rather than shiny.

Just make sure that the markings are engraved rather than just printed on. That means you can clean and re-mark them if necessary.

I have used 4X drugstore glasses for many years to do the tiny work I often do. You can easily get up to 3.75X in drugstores or some grocery stores. Don't buy the $3.00 ones. I paid $18.00 for mine.If your eyes are about the same you can get away with the drugstore glasses, though I used to get tired after a few hours wearing them. Now,I got implanted lenses in my eyes, but still use the glasses for close work.
