I am learning about different types of metal that is used in machining. I have machined several projects from brass or aluminum. What I am wanting to do is expand into steel. I have a source for 12L14 and understand it and use it. What I can,t seem to find is 1018 steel that is mentioned in several projects that I am looking at. I understand that it is free machining. Is this metal hot or cold rolled. I get Hot rolled steel that takes a lot of prep to look good. I'd like to get free machining steel in various sizes to avoid some work. I am working on a project that calls for standard size metal . In the pictures the metal is smooth and shiny. Where can I find this ? I s this a common steel that I should be able to find at a local metal outlet? Any help would be appreciated.

Check out http://www.speedymetals.com/ I believe they have 1018 available in a number of different shapes. I've had plenty of good experiences ordering from them as well.
