I want to jump into machining. Never have done this before, so I will have tons of questions. First off, what should I look for in a lathe? I want to be able to machine things for my other hobbies. Any recommendations on lathes around a 10x22 size? Also, what are things I need to look for in a milling machine

What are your other hobbies? This will narrow down the answer to your questions?

If you have the room and money look for a used knee mill. They are floor mounted machines that can be modified with power feed and Digital Readout. You will need a bench tool grinder to resharpen lathe bits as well. The size you mentioned is a good lathe size.

10x22 sounds like it might be big enough for those projects but might not be built heavy enough for the lawn mower work.

If you plan on work being up to 10x22 then plan on your lathe being 14x36 or bigger. You need room for your chuck, tailstock, & tooling.
