Newbie Here: Carbide Tips For Lathe

Hey guys,

Complete newb here. I have never used a lathe before. Got a sheldon xl-56. Have not gotten power run for it yet but I have been studying and trying to figure out what some of the tooling and stuff I have is.

I have been watching a lot of videos and people are using the carbide tips. I have some general questions about them.

As you can see in the picture, I found this thing that holds carbide tips and fits right down into the QCTP. Looks like it's pretty sturdy. I also found some of these carbide replacement tips? What I am wondering is, is there a rule of thumb about what size tip to use? Does it matter how much of the tip overhangs the end/side of the tool. The tips that are in there are 2 different sizes. Both of those are a different size than the one that is currently in the tool.

The tool tip and sides always have to stick out a little past the holder, or else nothing would cut. You need the clearance.

Make sure to clean out the insert pockets well before mounting the insert. Helps with rigidity and repeatability.

Most tool holders will accept a certain type of insert. The inserts you have may work, but they also appear to be a screw-in type to the holder.

It looks like the inserts in the box have been used before, look at the chamfers around the screw hole.

I have another question. I see several of these little things on the lathe. I believe they are places to oil but I'm not sure what kind of oiler to use to get oil in there. Can anyone point me to something I could use to oil them?

It's just the regular oiler with the tip. The ball bearing is spring loaded. It will retract when you press it down with the oiler tip. No need to go crazy with the squirt - just do a slow one and it will fill the oil cavity.

Great. Thanks again. I'm pretty sure I've seen that exact one at a local hardware store. I'm going to stop by there today and pick one up.

What weight oil do you put in yours for those little things?

Looks like a way? Way oil.

Mobil Vactra #2 is good. So is the cheap stuff. You want "Way oil" for your ways. It will keep them nice and happy for a very long time. It is ISO 68
