I get one thing taken care of, and another jumps up and bites me, lol. The Newall DP700 came with the mill, so I have no idea how old or what it's gone through so far. Shortly after it was delivered, I attempted to tighten the mounting screw on the quill scale and cracked the carbon fiber, ruining the scale. I ordered the replacement and installed it. If I remember correctly, it did work immediately following the replacement when I was milling some aluminum.

Yesterday when I was testing out a new face mill, and lowered the quill, I noticed it started at zero for a few thousandths then switched to "-" on the values. At about .030 of travel, it switched back to 0.000 and started over. Final reading was about .030 of depth, but visually it was almost an inch.

Any idea where to start with troubleshooting? I did attempt a power cycle to see if it would clear any errors, and nothing. Is there a calibration step I've missed?? I did download the manual today and will read through it this evening but thought I would ask here. Thanks.

I would start by removing the connection to the DRO and then reinserting it, then wiggling it a bit while tightening. It could be a loose or bad connection. The other alternative is to test it on a different input. If the problems continues then most likely it is an issue with the scale.

I have 2 of these. One on a mill other on a lathe. Never any troubles with them. I very much like how they work. Check in the manual and make sure that the scale resolution is set properly. You can pretty quickly walk through the whole setup menu and check all the settings.

Great news,
It was my error when installing the new scale. There are two separate rotating pins at the bottom of the scale that allow adjustment. When I reinstalled them I oriented it to where the top of the scale wasn't reaching all the way through the encoder. Just a quick adjustment and it's reading great.

Sidenote, the manual for the DP700 says there are only three encoders that work with the DRO. The Microsyn 10, Microsyn 5, and the Spherosyn 2G. Mine has a Microsyn 2G encoder. Not sure if it's just a name change or what, but it had me worried there for a sec.
