Made this new wheel handle just for some practice. Turned out pretty good... pun intended!

Looks good!
I need to make one for my 9A tailstock but do not know where to start.
Messed around last night for a few hours trying to turn a piece of rod down to the small dia. to fit the hole in the wheel w/not much luck.
Is the handle pressed into the hole or glued in somehow?

Not pressed or glued, i used the original bolt and nut to secure it.

Dead end hole in the handle, gotta be a friction fit, the handle does not spin
1947 9A south bend, cast iron wheel
I'm gaining on it.
Got the small end turned down to a tight fit in the handle.

Handle spins freely just as the factory one did. Drilled large end down to a shoulder for the factory bolt head to tighten against. Wheel hole is also threaded and had a nut on the back side. The threads in the wheel and the nut is where all of the rigidity cones from. Allowing the handle to free spin. I was going to make entire new wheels and handles but the stock i was trying to turn the wheels out of was a tad bit too big for my 7x10. Not to mention I made a huge rookie mistake that sent the 2 pound chunk of solid aluminum flying across my garage.

Yours must be a different set up than.
None of the wheel handles on my SB spin in the wheels, they are all solid and the holes for them are all dead end/blind holes.

Holes are threaded on this old HF machine.

Plain to see, we are not on the same page here.
A70 year old south bend vs a newer HF unit, geesh.....
