New to me Clausing lathe

More cleaning of the pan. So far today 1 Homer bucket load of oily chips. There is a cubby hole under the spindel that exists out the back. Completely full of chips. At least 2 lbs worth and I had to use a hook to drag them out the back. Draining tranny fluid too. Tomorrow I'll pull the fron cover and deep clean the gears. All gears look great, just old oil residue. Tom White stopped by and I let him pull the chuck for me. Came off easily but the spindel nose and 3 jaw chuck needs a good cleaning. Also pulled back cover off the clean. That's when I found the cars nest of chips.

In all my 40 plus years of being a machinist. I have never seen a lathe so packed with oily chips. That being said, the lathe components are in excellent condition. No wear or gouging on any of the ways cross slide or compound. A very solid machine to be sure.

I think in the 30 years the previous owner had it. He never cleaned out the chip tray. His shop was testament to poor house keeping.

I think he used it to just drill and tap shaft ends. Maybe the occasional turning.

Cutting oil is my blood.

Know I'm the proud owner of a Clausing 13 in gap bed lathe. Came with lots of tooling. One a 3 jaw chuck. Collet drawbar and Collets. This is the round head geared lathe. 3 hp 3 phase motor. Runs nice and quite. Overall length is 71 inches I think. Ways are nice. Comes with lots of free chips, no salsa.
I invited Tom White who works as a machinst. He likes it too. Biggest thing is a good cleaning. Drain the oil and add fresh Mobile lube. It has 2 gearboxes protected by an oil bath. Came with a turret too that off the machine and I'll never use. Equipped with Collet drawbar and every Collet imagination.
Now my Logan needs to sell and then I can move this in. This is a model 6500.
Looks great.
I have that model and was great lathe.

Cleaned more of the pan. That old dried coolant mixed with chips is hard to remove. I also pulled off the front gear selector so I can remove the transmission front cover. No broken gears but the old oil is like a heavy syrup. Then I'll re seal with permstex oil pan sealant. The old gasket was leaking. I had to use a heat gun and then sprayed with penatrating oil and cranked on the puller and with a bang it was off.

Someone at sometime had gotten water or coolant down in the transmission. Shafts are ok, gears are ok. The gear selector locator was pitted but cleaned up with bead blasting. All back together now and shifts gears ok. Nice lathe. But there is a design flaw, the lead screw lever in the front housing is so close to the cover there is almost no way to seal it up. Factory gasket would barely fit. I think that's how water got in it.

I need thing a bit cleaner.

Cutting oil is my blood.

I have posted pictures of the progress made on this lathe. I'm enclosing a picture of the lathe on the trailer after loading. I wanted to show just how bad the accumulated chips were. We removed so.e as I didn't want to get pulled over for crap flying down the freeway. It was so deep in the back corner that there was a large back plate buried under it all.

I sold this lathe to my friend Tom White. And we moved it to his shop. Rented the same drop bed trailer. This move was easy as Tom brought a pallet jack. We had the pallet jack under the headstock end and 2 skates under the back. After delivery Tom, his nephew Andrew my son Ryan and I went and picked up my model 5907 Clausing. 2 lathes moved in one day. It's nice to have great friends.
