New old portable Bandsaw - horizontal/vertical mounting?

I wanted a faster way to cut stock material than with a hacksaw which I have been using for the past couple of years. It's a great workout, but it sort of slows down the progress of the work which I already don't have much spare time for. but trying to keep the budget minimal I kept waiting for an opportunity. I missed on one last month of a $50 almost new HF type 4x6 bandsaw (was too far from me to make it in time, and I'm not sure I even have space to store it, nor to transport it)... but just found a portable dewalt for not much more which came with 3 extra blades as well, it's used, but seems to be in good shape other than cosmetically a bit rough around the edges. runs nicely, and I like the VS and the build in light:

Question is - should I use it hand held? mount it horizontally somehow ? mount it vertically ?I've seen some nice vertical mount options, so might go that route, but might just use it handheld for now. how are you using yours? got pic?

I have the equivalent of the HF portable bandsaw. Not as good as yours, but very useful. There are very few shop sessions where I don't reach for this tool. I do have a 9x12 horizontal and a vertical I converted from woodcutting, but the portable is the number one cutting tool.

I'd advise using it as-is for a while. It's quite likely you'll never see a need to mount it.

I have Port Cable one, I see no need to have it mounted. When your ready to devote the real estate to a stationary bandsaw, get a 4x6 or bigger.

Thanks, I've seen those on youtube - they are nifty, but like I said above, I am trying to minimize expenses on an already non existent budget - I cannot justify spending twice as much as I spent on the stand as I did on the saw... besides, I'm at hobby machinist - I'd rather MAKE it if I were to. ;)

Thanks Kenny, I think that's what it'll be for the time being unless I find a NEED to mount it I'll just freehand it.

Sharon that is the way it played out for me. I sawed my way through what I didn't want to part on the lathe. Friends would come over and sit in the shop. I'd saw a few minutes and uncle Arthur would make me quit. We'd talk a bit and I'd saw some more. Most would offer help but I'd point out that they weren't cultured enough to use such high tech machinery as a hack saw. And that they would only jerk it back and forth. We'd talk a while and I'd point out that I could hold a few tenths of an inch and most cutting services could only hold 250 thousandths. Never really realizing that was 2.5 tenths. I am unabashed so I guess I'm a cad.

I bought a porta band from craigs list and built a vertical table for it. Couple of months went past friends were thinking I had no projects, because the sawing wasn't part of the visit.

A little health thingy popped up and I knew I'd spend some time not being able to lift more than 10lbs so I bought a HF 4x6 before I went in.

I'm just saying a good blade on a portable saw is good. A stationary saw is troublesome. Now when I come in the house on a Saturday and pay any attention to the Wife, she accuses me of sawing. That really hurts!
Mostly because it is true.

Steve, how very true! thanks for the chuckles. I could related to many a things you wrote. keep up the health, without it - it's difficult to do anything else. and thanks for the tidbits.
