Hello everyone. I just stumbled across this site and would like some advice from any PM-728VT or similar size machine owners if you would be so kind.
I'm planning to replace a combination lathe and milling machine that I've owned for almost 30 years, beginning with a new bench top milling machine.
I started out thinking I was going to get a small LMS milling machine but over the past month I think I have settled on a PM-728VT. It's realistically the largest one that will fit in the limited space in the garage in my current house. I'm pretty much at the analysis paralysis stage right now but this is what I think I will be ordering from Precision Mathews:
PM-728VT w/MX 200 DRO
X-axis power feed
11 piece Ultra Precision R8 Collett Set
0-1/2" Ultra Precision Keyless Chuck
So my questions are:
1. My friend put DROs on his big Bridgeport and I definitely want them on my next machine. Would you recommend getting them pre-installed on the machine or is adding them separately the way to go?
2. Right now all my tooling is MT3 so I figured I would start out with an R8 collet set. Is it worth it for a home hobby machinist to get the ultra precision set from PM or is there a better way to get the most bang for my buck.
3. Does anyone have any experience with the 0-1/2" Ultra Precision Keyless Chuck that PM offers? Is it a good one?
Thanks in advance.
Dave
