I went to Harbor Freight to buy a couple things and I purchased a chain saw sharpener for a price that would justify buying it due to the cost of new chain saw blades. After getting it home I went on Youtube and watched a video that showed how to use it. I then remembered that I had bought the Neilsen sharpener years back on ebay, but after getting it, I thought pieces were missing, so I put it on the shelf. Well, I took it down and looked at it again.. Very much like the HF version, but quality American made. Nothing missing.. what was I thinking before? I cleaned and lubricated it and corrected a couple problems including welding the steel locking arm and grinding it down square again (painted red), reshaping the lock down lever on the front so it would stay locked, and adjusted the angle lever tension bolt so it would hold tight at the right angle. It is in very good shape. The yellow marks were painted by the previous owner to mark the sharpening angle which is 35 degrees one way and a comparable angle the opposite way. Is the value of this angle correct for your typical small chain saw blade ?

I now know basically how it is suppose to work and the procedure for sharpening blades thanks to the videos on youtube. The only thing I'm having trouble with is what appears to be a dressing tool for the wheel. The two knobs show below operate it.. one is to adjust the height and the other one is apparently used to swing the tip into the wheel to shape it. It appears to have a hard tip, which may or may not be worn and in need of replacement. Can anyone confirm this and explain the shaping procedure? There is little or no info on this machine despite searching on the web. I was unable to find a user manual either.

Does the tip of the tool appear to be too worn to use? What should the wheel angle be when properly dressed? Right now, the wheel angle doesn't line up with the blade cutting portions. Any input would be apperciated.

btw.. I took the HF sharpener back today and got my 40.00 back.
