Ok folks got a electric motor 5/8 arbor. I'd like to put a grinding wheel on it, but it is not threaded for one.

1. Can i buy a 5/8-11 die and thread it

2. Does anyone make a 5/8 id arbor adapter to 5/8-11 threaded arbor adapter? Most the ones i see are 5/8 threaded id.

Anyone with any ideas on how to attach a grinding wheel to this.

Such an arbor does exist, but I think most would have a 1/2" fine thread and arbor size.

The bolt on arbors are usually only a ½" You could use a ½"x ⅝" bushing to fit the wheel.

I ran a file over the arbor....it doesnt seem to be hardened, my file was biting

I think i'll try threading with a die....anyone done this before

The hard part is ensuring the die starts absolutely square to the shaft. I would take the motor apart and mount the rotor in the lathe and start with the die in a tailstock mounted die holder. However, once I got that far I'd probably just single-point thread it. My concerns would be any runout that could cause excessive vibration, potentially causing damage to the wheel.

Ok guys got what i think i need from you folks.

Can't thank you guys enough, you always come thru for me when i get in a quarndry

Or...

Make an over-arbor.

Three are larger sized arbor grinding wheels.

So I will use 1 inch as example.

With a lathe you can make a bushing that is a very close slip fit to shaft then thread the outside.

Next, you make either just flat washers or threaded end plates.

Amount of work depends on how creative you want to be.

However that motor may not be good for a grinder, may be better looking for one.

I want to thank all that replied. I took your ideas and looked at the pictures and made one. I just have drill and tap for a 1/4-28 set screw

Thanks folks, you really helped me.
