Hello everyone,
I am in the process of bringing a 1940's DoAll ML vertical bandsaw back to life. My current problem is the speed indicator - it is intact but the cable has been cut. I am wondering how to fix it - DoAll wants $150 for a new cable! I figure that auto-parts stores may have something similar used in cars, just not sure what to ask for. Also - can anyone tell me how/where the cable would actually take the speed reading? On the Vari-speed pulley? On the gearbox? There must be some sort of rotary "reader" missing here... I can't find a diagram or blueprint of how this works. Thanks a lot for any help!

You want a speedometer cable. Not sure what type of end pieces you would need. Good luck

I know it is a speedometer cable- I know someone with one. I vaguely remember it might be similar to GM speedo, so that might help. I can email my friend if that helps, as he fully restored his. Let me know if you want me to do that.

Also look into bicycle speedometers, I'm not sure how long your cable has to be, but it's a thought. You should be able to cobble something back together.

Bernie,
I looked into it and it looks like I can use a regular automotive speedometer cable. I am unfortunately also missing the speedo gearbox used to connect the cable to the saw's main gearbox (pulley/belt assembly). My plan is to use a motorcycle speedo gearbox. It would be awesome if you could check with your friend and let me know what he used - thanks!
