Pardon if posted in wrong area.

Following up on my earlier post “Updated opinions PM vs Grizzly”. I am looking for a suggested selling price. I have more than $1,500 into the restoration just in parts, raw materials and tooling. I have reached a point where I can post some photos of the nearly finished restoration, to request a selling price. I have not decided where and when I will list the lathe.

The lathe is a 13” Sheldon, 70” long bed (including head stock and tail stock), taper attachment (looks like I’m missing the parts to attach to cross slide – going to confirm), original tool post. QCTP is off my Grizzly and would not go with the Sheldon lathe.

Items that have been replaced, repaired.

  • All new bearings and bushings
  • CNC machined replacement half nuts
  • Machined worm for power feeds on apron
  • New gear in apron for power feeds
  • New drive belts on spindle and cone pulleys
  • All new paint (a few hidden areas were left original in case color matching was desired down the road)
  • Replace damaged oil ports and damaged oil cups
  • One of the brass reverse gears
  • New Norton gearbox output shaft (outsourced the hardening and ground to size)
  • Added some thrust bearing in some locations
Remaining items on my to-do list.

  • Make new felt wipers for carriage
  • Clean 3-jaw chuck
  • Assemble taper attachment
  • 2nd brass reverse gear
  • Make new cross slide lead screw

Thanks for understanding.

This was not a listing, it was a request for what I could expect the selling price could be. Thus my statement below.

@Mogar I understand your intent, and I am also willing to help with pricing, and certainly .your work is immaculate. Bravo on such a great restoration.

In our market place in the frozen North, what the lathe comes with, i.e. how functional it is at purchase, makes a significant difference in selling price. More than the condition of the lathe. IF it came with 3J 4J, steady rest, follow rest, tool post (of any kind), and all the wrenches and change gears, about 3000$ in our Northern Pesos.

Here is the rub - your starting premise, and the reason for your posting is to discuss selling the machine, and pricing it. With only 5 posts, it is hard to distinguish you from people who only post for the purpose of selling. That is why @Eddyde gave you a gentle reminder in the forum. It avoids the moderators from getting this thread reported as a possible selling violation. It gives you the understanding that you are edging up to the line that looks like a solicitation without stepping over.

I look forward to seeing more of your posts - you do beautiful and thorough work! I'd love to see progress pictures as you go if there is a next time! And thanks for the great pictures!

Thanks for the pricing information. Looking forward to more opinions of others.
