This was a bit challenging and I failed 4 times before succeeding. I have to do a customer barrel and this was the test run.

First four failed attempts...

I kept failing until I left the half-nut engaged the whole time. I shut the lathe down, backed out the compound and reversed the direction, then advanced the compound a little and turned it on to normal direction. Took about 10 passes since it was my first time.

Cool, is that a muzzle thread, or a receiver thread? What platform?

I for one favor threading with the split nut closed, as you've done. 32p has four points on the threading dial giving a 50/50 chance you'll randomly engage the leadscrew correctly each time, or ruin your part if you don't.

Howdy neighbor! The threads look good! As far as the half-nut, I tend to use the thread dial, particularly since reversing my lathe is an adventure, but I REALLY like the ability to stop on a dime with disengaging the half nut.

A bit of Cratex (rubberized abrasive) or a nut with some clover compound will really polish those up. That's a pretty fine thread for anything on a barrel - what is it?

It's the castle nut thread for the flash suppressor on a M14/M1A rifle. The barrel I chopped was a shot-out barrel that I used for training.

Here's a factory barrel with the threads...

Here's what it looks like when it's all put together.
