SUBJECT; Antique Briggs Stratton cast iron single cylinder block, hone for 10 over piston.

I got a used ammco 400 rigid precision hone and i somewhat understand the operation instruction sheet pasted in the lid. Now for some questions (not in instructions) about getting the bore honed to the size before using a ball or flex hone finish od.

Using a drill press what speed do i set it?

How much will the flex hones remove for final ring finish?

These Ammco stones and wipers are oil less, do u agree? if not what do i use?
I got Ammco 619,620 and 621 stone sets. I can tell the difference between them ok from course to fine. Instructions don't say which ones to use at first, second, third or even these sets. Can these part numbers be cross-overed to grit? Then what grit does one start with?

I got 40 some used loose thick stones all marked with the numbers above. It looks like they were used willy-nilly not kept in pairs. Can I take pairs or even 4 at a time, practice in some junk blocks to resize the stones same thickness? I plan on throwing the chipped ones out. Should I reverse drill direction to resize the stones evenly? After this they should be put away in sets, not left in the carriers to get chipped up. Does any of this make sense?

thanks for any help,

Well, according to Goodson http://www.goodson.com/technical_support/instructions/Shortblock_Rebuilding/HL-1600.pdf the rpm of the honing should be 1200 divided by the cylinder diameter. My experience with honing is rather limited as I've recently gotten a Sunnen Honall that I'm setting up to do valve guides. Goodson does have a good tech library if you are interested, may answer some of your questions: http://www.goodson.com/technical_support/technical_library.php
