I am learning the ropes and hoping to get some guidance so I can start making some chips with my PM1236. Along with the machine, I bought the Baldor motor upgrade. I removed the pulley off of the factory motor using a pulley puller. I am not clear on how to install the pulley on the Baldor motor shaft. I searched for info and finding none, I am here. The included instructions cover the wiring but not the proper manner to mount the pulley with a key. The center of the shaft is threaded though I do not know the thread specs.

Also, the pulley as originally mounted had a hex screw tightened into a recess on the motor shaft. There is not a corresponding recess on the Baldor motor. Do I need to do more than just tighten the hex screw? (Assuming I can get the pulley on :) )

it appears that you have 2 different shaft accessory mounting methods at play.
at a guess you have a "J" shaft on the baldor motor, signifying a pump motor
sometimes the J shaft is tapered with a woodruff key, sometimes just tapered without provision for a key.
not always, but normally- pulleys, sheaves, and gears that are keyed to a straight shaft do not have pulley retention nuts on the distal end of the shaft.
they are retained by set screws @90° to the shaft.

if you are going to place a keyed pulley on a round shaft and attempt to use a nut to retain the assembly, you are going to experience problems.
an adapter will need to be considered as well as the choice of replacement motor.

sorry to be a buzzkillington,
but a straight shaft motor may be the best replacement given the work to adapt a J shaft to straight shaft transmission devices

I’d be getting in touch with PM and asking some questions about why they sent you a motor that isn’t a direct replacement.

Allow me to clarify: Both shafts are keyed. The pulley itself is also tapped and threaded with a hex screw. Here are my questions:
1. How do I get the pulley & key shaft aligned and then installed?
2. Do I need to drill an indent in the shaft for the hex screw or just simply tighten the screw?
Thank you for your help -

Just simply tighten the screw, if the shaft/pulley is keyed, the key locks the rotation of the pulley, the screw prevents lateral sliding movement. You may want to use a small amount of medium strength locktite on the threads of the screw.

Thanks for the reply......How do I advance the pulley on the shaft? I'm struggling with how to articulate the question.......It's a snug fit....Hammer?

The pulley should fit onto the shaft snugly but should slide on, it may be that the key is a bit wanky on the size (this is a common problem). Try to fit the key in the motor shaft and make sure it fully seats, you may need to lightly stone the key so that it slides into the motor shaft. May need to take off any burs with some fine sandpaper and then clean everything well. Apply some a thin film of light weight oil on the shaft and gently tap the pulley onto the motor shaft, use a soft mallet or a block of wood as an interface as to not damage anything. It should go in without much force.

I always put a little heat to a pulley when fitting to a shaft, they go on much smoother with less fussing if it’s expanded a bit.

You may need to lightly polish the pulley bore with some fine emery cloth and the key also till you get a tight sliding fit. Don't try to force it on if it's too tight

Update - After A LOT of polishing I was able to get the pulley on. I'm one step closer to getting the lathe up and running. Thanks to all for your help. Great forum.
