this is my big question, how far does the step on the backing plate need to be to slide inside of chuck, right now there is about a 1/8 of step but my chuck has room for about 3/8ths Thanks guys :biggrin:Mac

That is sufficient to register the chuck. I would leave it like that, rather than making it deeper, unless there are runout issues. Even then I'd just turn the first 1/8" under, and move in another 1/8" for a new register.

thanks Tony, i wasnt for sure so i fig i better ask lol, going to have some time on the backing plate its about 3 inches bigger than the chuck so there is def going to be some chips or should i say grit lol:biggrin:Mac

Then may I suggest a trepan tool sop you end up with a usable cast iron ring?

Good excuse to make one, then. It's simply a grooving tool with radiused clearance to plunge in the face of the part and cut a groove through it. Kind of a sideways part-off tool.

Hi Mac

Out of interest, is that for 5C collets? What size od is the closer plate? A friend of mine is looking around at collet closers. The type your pic shows looks like it would be easyer for mounting, and with out the tube , and handwheel to deal with.
