I picked up 2 Derbyshire Magnus heads, 2 tailstocks and 1 bed. I plan on making a complete lathe. I was wondering what would be a good choice for a motor. I paid $60 for all of that. Decent price?
RPM range
HP/ Watts
Variable drive if reasonable?

Also are tool rests interchangeable for different manufactures? I could make one.

Mind you. I have no real need for a watchmakers lathe. Other than the fact they are totally *****in.

I have cleaned up the tailstocks. I will need to make the locking lever and T bolts for both.

The heads are free and feel smooth. I do not want to keep turning them before a full tear down and clean.

Probably don't need more than around 1/8 HP or even less
Small motors like that are available on Ebay both ac and dc
Variable speed you want a dc motor with a controller like KB electronics

+1 on a sewing machine motor with a foot treadle
A 4mm polyurethane belt would be a good choice- easy to get, easy to form a belt, and relatively inexpensive-and also durable

Perfect. Sewing machine motor it is. I have 2 other projects I need to do before this. In the mean time I can hunt for a tool rest or make one.

Thanks. I will keep that marked for when it is time to buy it.

Ok next question. This pertains to pulley sizes. As there are 4 different sizes on the head. I would like to make a 4 step pulley for the motor. If at all possible, I would like to be able to use the same belt and mounting position.

Is it as simple as measuring existing pulley diameters and making the motor pulley steps the same incremental steps?

You are free to make any design features that you wish.
The foot pedal may provide adequate speed control with a 2 step pulley
