OK. So I have what is most likely a stupid question. If it is, than it's definately not my first.

If I want to thread a shaft, say 1/2" x 13, I need to turn the shaft down to 1/2" right? Or is there clearance that needs to be accounted for?

Thanks,
Corey

Yes, turn it down to 1/2 that will be your major diameter and the minor diameter will be the threads. No such thing as stupid questions on this forum, Corey.
When I singlepoint a thread, I chase the threads with a triangular file and run another file over the crests of the threads to break the sharp crests.

Wow, thanks for the quick responses.

I have a tap drill chart, is there a chart available with the min's and max's for outer threads?

The Stupid Question dept has been closed for upgrades. Till it comes back on line you will just have to deal with the rest of the members for the advice.
The only stupid question is the one that wasn't asked. That is why a lot of us are here.To make sure there are real people that keep these skills alive.
Keep asking and we will keep explaining.

No, that was not a dumb question. I just learned that my major dia. can be smaller than spec. Hey whats the name of that chart? So I can buy a hard copie for the shop.
Thanks Randy

That chart was hand typed on a typewriter 25-30 years ago as a student handout when I taught night school machine shop. The link I posted is the full 8-1/2" x 11" size.

That's going to come in very useful. Thanks!
