The surface grinder I bought on Friday had a Mitutoyo SDV-18B mounted to measure up/down on the spindle (it has power up/down for rapid movement) which seemed like a handy idea. Unfortunately, the battery cap was completely trashed. I could barely get it off, but the unit powered up and zeroed after I installed a new battery. I power cycled it on/off and it seemed to retain zero, so other than some cleaning I think all it needs is a new battery cap. I've spent hours trying to sort out a part number and come up blank. It seems this model is no longer made, and I can't find a reference to it to try finding a battery cap part number. Any idea what I should do next...call Mitutoyo USA or something like that?

Brother a guy with a 3D printer could print you one no problem.
Well, I've got a decent 3D printer, but didn't think to try finding an STL file for it. I figured I would need maybe a Mitutoyo part number for reference. The one that was on there had one of the tabs broken off as well. One of the guys at work (four of us have 3D printers on our work benches) is pretty good with Fusion so maybe he could get close...worth a shot.

Hmmm.....this looks pretty much like it. Worst case I waste about a nickel's worth of filament!

I'd probably wire an external 1.5v cell
I actually was able to find the parts list on Mitutoyo's website which showed there's an o-ring/packing as well as the cap. Grand total for the two parts is about $4-5 most places that have them online, but shipping is ridiculous on all of them. The cheapest I've found so far was $14 shipping. If I get two of each it would be $12.50 per setup. Pretty crazy for what it is.

I 3D printed the one above and it doesn't fit.

Check with Zoro, buy with a 20% off coupon and a handful of other stuff to get the $50 free shipping. Or check with Grainger and do local pickup (assuming you have one nearby).

Thanks...I had looked at both and neither one had them listed.

Could you use the old cover and hold it in place with a small spring clamp or binder clip?

I'm sort of doing that now...a piece of tape will keep it in place. One of the internal mounting tabs is missing, and there's no seal/packing that's supposed to be there, so I suspect grinding swarf would find its way in there eventually. It's far from an emergency, but I'd like to get the proper cover and packing if possible. Heck, I need a couple of parts for the grinder to be able to use it, so it's not happening any time soon!
