I talked to a guy today who was a military veteran (I would guess 20 years or so back). He said he was a machinist there and they had access to a trailer full of machine tools. He said they used lathes that had an attachment that converted them to a milling machine. I forgot the brand name machine he mentioned. Anybody ever seen or used one of these in the military? Seems interesting, although most things I have used that did 2 things did neither well.

When I was in the army my job was across the road from an army machine shop. On one occasion I got to go over there when we needed to have a modification made to a machine gun mount. Now some 20 years later as well and a home machinist I wish I could recall the equipment they had in that building, though I do remember full sized lathes and knee mills. What you said the guy describing sounds like a field truck to me as the reconfigurable machines were probably a compromise for space available. Your comment about things that do two jobs but neither of them well reminds me of the saying about the futon. The worlds most uncomfortable couch that turns into the worlds most uncomfortable bed.

That looks like it. Thanks. Add to my list of “always wanted one”.
