I am heading out to Vancouver next weekend and was hoping to stick up on some aluminum bar stock and brass sheet stock for gear making. Can anyone suggest some good places where they will sell small quantities?

I had no idea eBay was cheaper. I just assumed that Vancouver would have a great place to stock up on supplies.
As to size of gears... I'm not actually certain. I'm thinking of starting a clock come winter time and as I was in Vancouver I could stock up on supplies in preparation.

First let me welcome you to the group from one of your neighbours, I am in Nelson.

Secondly, it depends on the type of material you are looking for as to where is the best place to buy it.

Metal Supermarkets will ship and supply small amounts of various metals. Langley branch is the one whose territory we are in. I often add clients stock to my orders when I am placing mine to get in stuff for others.

For larger quantities, then there are a few other places I get metals from.

KIS in Nelson keeps some metal on hand and figures it is all gold plated, but at least they have metal and are local.

Thanks For the great news Walter. I'm very new at all this. But am loving it. Are there any regular meetups with other Nelsonites?

I'm currently on holiday on Hornby Island and connection is spotty here sometimes. So sorry for the delay in answering.

No known meet ups in this area, although you are welcome to stop in and chat.

There are a few assorted machinist types in the area, and I have had one chap stop in that had seen me on South Bend Yahoo Group and another the other day from the Clausing group.

As far as the blokes on hobby-machinst, the closest I have seen so far besides yourself is Mike in Kelowna and Paul in Vernon.

I have a young chap in Creston that I mentor a bit that has just gotten himself a lathe.

Otherwise not sure who and what is around that would be interested in meeting up. There is a (from what I have been told) super well equiped shop up the mountain from me, and he does some fancy proto-typing of equipment, but never hear from him much. There are a few others into this and that, making bikes, chairs, and decorative statues that I see every so often, then those that are into fixing up old cars. I am told there was a steam group in Nelson, but have never heard much about it nor ever met anybody that was involved with it.

As I said earlier, you are welcome to stop in and chat and I am open to helping mentor people in my area.

I do run a tool store here and sell a variety of parts and accessories for just about every medium, glass, wood, metal, plastic or WHU and regularly bring in tooling, metal machines and parts for the locals. Will also mail order to others but I am not really on these lists to advertise my wares.

You will drive by my shop on the way from Nelson to Kaslo.

Hi Walter

Sounds like I definitely will stop by your shop next time I make a run into Nelson.
I'm such a beginner that I would love to have some one explain the basics some time.
But I promise not to take up too much of your time.

And I'm still trying to find the cheapest way to get parts and supplies to me. Sounds like you could be great help there. Thanks.

It's funny how when you start to do something you find so many people around you who are interested in the strange things you are.
I'm just some guy in his basement trying to figure out how to make metal do stuff that's cool and interesting. And next you know I've met others with lathes around me doing uniquely different and interesting things.

I'll see if I can dig up more info on the possible Nelson Steam group. Sounds interesting.
Thanks so much.
