I picked up a similar optical table locally for $40 (I completely scored). I am going to make a work bench out of it and probably use it for woodworking. Mine doesn't have the 1/4" hole grid (I wish it did) which would be perfect for fastening perpendicular metal straight edges for clamping face frames and such. The optical table I purchased also didn't come with the base. Most optical table bases are vibration dampened which make the bases themselves cost many thousands of dollars. Optical tables are quite flat, but not as flat as a surface plate.

It would also make a perfect table for a CNC router project in my opinion.

The substrate between the top and bottom of my table is a case metal web designed to keep the table planer. I would not use and optical table for welding though.
