I am running a Hercus 9" (SB clone) with plain cast iron bearings. I have a job that warrents changing the drive pulley and upping the spindle speed a goodly amount. The current setup pulley gives me a maximum rpm of 365. I have a pulley that will up the maximum speed to 865 RPM. Not sure if I am going to be exceeding the speed rating for my lathe. I have done a bit of searching but havent yet found anything that specifically lists my situation.
Any ideas anyone?

See if you can find "Text Book of Turning" by P.F. Hercus on line. Pages 7 and 8 discuss the headstock and mention both plain and roller bearing models. It says that both are operated in the same manner. Page 8 has a chart of speeds, including the model with the high-speed drive. Maximum speed listed is 2600 RPM.

--->macrnr. That link doesnt work for me :dunno:

--->Mike, thanks very much for that. Found it and lists 1050 RPM top speed so as I am not going that high I am happy to think I can run at my 865 RPM comfortably.
