I was at this estate sale today, picking up a slip roll and some metal stock. There's some useful stuff remaining; most large machines are gone, though there is a massive vertical band saw, a large horizontal saw, and a drill-press table with four heads on it. He has some tooling and measuring equipment. Prices aren't the lowest you could hope for, but there are some things that may interest you if you're in the area. Figured someone may want to know about it.

That Grob bandsaw is a steal, the rest aren't too bad as it's quality stuff. Good thing its on the other side of the world :)

Yea the band saw is a great deal just a massive pain to move. I’ve moved a Bridgeport and a 12x36 lathe but that band saw seems on another level.

It‘s 1500lbs, less than a Bridgeport and the motor/drive is down low. I’m not saying it’s a piece of cake, but 500+less than a BP.

Everybody does different work and needs different machines. Once I understood how much I needed a vertical metal bandsaw and did my cheapo conversion of a 14" I can't be without it. And that Grob is to vertical saws what the BP is to mills. They almost never come up around here and the last one that was under $800 was for parts only. It was junk.

Apparently the Grob is not in working condition, or so the owner has been told. I know they have a gearbox and a reeve drive, so I’m guessing those are the biggest potential issues (with the gear box being the more significant of the two). I’m going to look at it more closely but any advice you may have would help. I should probably remain content with my powermatic 14”.

Yeah, if your 14” is working for you I’d leave well enough alone. I figured something was wrong if it was that cheap. I have reeve drive on my Delta UniDrill and I decided to change the belt because it was the original from the 60’s. Stupid move on my part. What a pain and it seems the general net census is if it’s working leave it alone. I got it working but it was several days of cussing it. I need to go back tweak now it’s been running for a while and I’m NOT looking fwd to it. Otherwise it’s an awesome drill.

My Clausing drill press has a simple one and Clausing lathe has a beefy hydraulic one. They both work but they aren’t quiet. Super convenient but a VFD covers a good bit of ground. One thing I dislike about my powermatic is changing speeds with a belt (for only three options in each of high/low).
